Dear period 6, I started reading all your separate posts and grading them separately, but there were over 20 late blogs posted which would have taken me at least 2 hours to grade at the busiest time of the school year. I can't be that inconvenienced because you couldn't be bothered to do your work on time. All of you will get a grade of 4 for each post. You won't see comments, but it will show up in your report card grade. I may decide not to give credit for individual blogs, but that won't be recorded. Any comments were too late for a grade. I really enjoyed your posts, even the late ones. :) Have a great summer.Ms. G

E ink is electronic ink devices. It displays text for e-book readers, they are not actual ink on paper texts. Right now e-ink can only display text, soon they are hoping to advance it to show movement. They also want it to show color with out affecting is reliability or usefulness.

Savings rate climbs

This article is about the stimulus and how most of the money that was suppose to help the economy was put into savings. This made the consumer rate go down because consumers are not spending money which means there is no money circulating into the economy. I chose this because I started to save money too because college is coming and I now see that it was somehow effecting the economy. I agree and disagree with this because saving money is always good but on the other hand not spending money is really not helping the economy. I think this was presented somewhat fairly but I think they didn't get look at the point of view of the consumer and just the economy.

1.)Youtube is expecting to pull in about $250million revenue this year. Theyre costs are expected to go up to as high as $700million. Google will end up losing a calculated $470million on youtube.com. Recent talk may lead to Youtube charging people to post videos on their site. This change would drastically drop the amount of users on the site, but will also rid the site of alot of the nonsensical crap posted daily.
2.)I chose this article because I use youtube.com daily. Putting a charge on user generated vids will drastically change the site.
3.) i partially agree with whats going on. Itd be nice to see less "crap" vids posted on the site, but at the same time, people who post on the site may not beable to post anymore if they dont have the finds to. This change may not be completely positive.

3.)I dont agree with whats happening because we should only pay for our own health, not others. Hopefully this problem is fixed whenever our healthcare system is reformed(supposedly in the near future)

Heinz 4Q profit falls 10 percent

This article is about the Heinz co. and how they are not selling alot of there products overseas and in restaurants because many people are eating in due to the economy. This is also about how the value of there stock fell just like any other companies. Also because they sell internationally they value of the dollar is to strong to convert. I chose this artricle because i love ketchup and i could somehow be effected if they were to stop selling it or they don't make money to stay in business. I don't agree because ketchup is great and more people should buy it but more importantly if overseas they do buy it no matter how strong the dollar is it should convert the same. I believe that they presented the information farly. I will continue to use this source.

mortgage or in foreclosure

This article about the drastic increase of homes being forclosed and home owners being behind on there mortgage payments. I chose this article because I live in a neigborhood where many houses are for sale and im pretty such its because of the morgage payments also rent for homes are very high. I really can't agree or disagree with this article but i do believe with the new loan modification and refinancing plan the President Barack Obama put out will help with some if this mess and make it easier for people to have homes next year. I think that they layed it out for me to understand fairly well. I will ise this source again just like I have done in the past.

$1.2 billion stimulus for summer jobs

1) This artical is about how the government is putting about a billion dollers of stimulus money to give teens summer jobs/ job training. The percentage of teens that work hasn't been this low since 1948. This extra money hopes to reverse that.

2) I choose this article because alot of kids, including me, need to find work after school is over an this was interesting to know

3) I agree with whats happening in the artical because there needs to be more jobs created for people who cant work full time or who need training to work full time. With the current economy its difficult for untrained teens to break into the workforce.

What is this item about?- this item is about people in the united states working in places they would like to leave but cant because they will not recive health benifits anywhere else. Because health insurance is tied to employment in the United States, workers who leave their jobs will have extrmely high hospital bills if they quit on their own or take a position with a company that offers fewer benefits.

Why did you choose it? - i chose this article because i like reading up on the job updates.

health care reforms

President Obama wants to have health care reforms finished by this year. The exact way that reforms are going to be made are still in question and still need to be made finalized. The total cost of health care in the U.S. is estimated to be around 1 trillion dollars. The government needs to find a way to pay for that, and make citizens pay less. The system is supposed to guarentee health care for the almost 47 million people who are uninsured, as well as make it more affordable for people who have health insurance.

Also, the payment towards hospitals and doctors will be based more on the outcomes of the pacients and not as much on the volume of services provided to the pacient.

I chose this aricle because I recently spent time in the hospital, and the hospital bills were very expensive. I agree that health care needs to be reformed for the better of the citizens. I would use this source again because it is relaible and presented the information fairly and clearly.

Durable Goods Orders See Biggest Gain in 16 Months

This article is about another bright spot in the countries economy. The article is stating the increase in which manufactured goods are being bought. The information was given to the government and these statistics backed there reasoning to say the recession is winding down. But there was a dark spot. The amount of bought Civilian aircraft and parts decreased. I chose this article because the recession is a big part of everyone's life in America and is affecting everyone. Yes i agree with their oppinion to think the recession is winding down because lately it seems like the economy stopped straying away and is starting to go back to what it used to be. The information is being given fairly because it is all statistics.Yes i would use this source again.

Four- Yes, I think the information was presented fairly. It explained everything pretty well and gave a couple good details.

Gap inc haha!

Many clothing retailers are struggling with weak sales, but the company hopes lower-priced Old Navy, which has been retooled to cater in part to frugal moms, will be a vehicle for growth. The company launched an ad campaign for Old Navy in February and is overhauling its fashions. So far, the merchandise efforts are gaining traction, but Murphy said there's still more work to be done to take the product from "acceptable" to "great" in customers' eyes.

Old Navy posted just a 3 percent same-store sales decline in the quarter, compared with an 18 percent decline a year ago. Meanwhile, Gap's North American division suffered a 12 percent same-store sales decline, compared with a 7 percent drop a year ago, and Banana Republic's North American division dropped 13 percent, compared with 4 percent a year ago.

i like this article. i am a former gap inc empolyee and i can understand this article fully! personally , old navy should be one of the most go 2 stores for retail because prices are always resonable. i liked the way the articale was presented. i would definatly use this source again.

A Russian Internet investment firm has invested $200 million in Facebook, giving the social networking company a cash buffer during the recession and pegging its value at $10 billion. Facebook did not need to raise additional funds, but welcomed Digital Sky's investment as a "cash buffer" that will help it grow comfortably, Zuckerberg said.

this article kinda bothered me because, did Russia really have to invest 200 million in Facebook? i guess for them its beneficial but that money can go to a lot better things. i do not agree with this article, although this article was presented fairly. i would use this source again.

White-nose syndrome, a fungal disease that shows as a powdery pattern on the face, wings and legs of bats, is moving far more swiftly across America. Bat colonies have been decimated in at least seven states: New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. At least half a million bats have died, depriving the country particularly in the spring and summer months of a natural pesticide. Bats consume huge quantities of insects: as much as their own body weight during a night aloft. The Forest Service estimates that the die-off from white-nose syndrome means that at least 2.4m pounds of bugs (1.1m kg) will go uneaten. The effects of the disease, though, go beyond an itchy evening in the garden. Without bats, farmers may have to use more insecticide, raising environmental worries and pushing up grocery prices. I chose this item because it sparked my interest. This article actually made me worry. This is the first time I've ever heard about this topic. This article was very informant. i defiantly would use this source again.

Deeper plunge

Mexico’s economy is likely to sink further and faster than had been expected, given the shocking contraction of 8.2% in the first quarter of the year. The shrinkage came prior to the outbreak of the H1NI virus and its consequent damage to the economy. As a result, it is clear that Mexico’s economy will be hit even harder in the subsequent quarters, and this is prompting downward revisions to GDP growth forecasts across the board. I chose this article because, i wanted 2 follow the news on the outbreak of "swine flu". Its sad that this is the result of an unfortunate outbreak, but its understandable. This information is presented fairly . i would use this source again.

Most credit cards not managed by local banks

http://www.recordonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090520/BIZ/905200361

This article is about how wrong some of us are regarding our credit cards. Most of us believe that the name of th bank on the front of our cards are the ones that gives us the credit but the true is that they dont, the ones who gives us the credit limit and late fees are larger firms who are the ones that managed most small banks and many large ones. I choose this article because the title cought my attention. Im surprise with this. I never thought of this at all. Therefore is hard to say if I agree or not. It is fairly presented because this is something new for me. Yes I will used this news source again.

Joblessness in Mid-Hudson region declines a bit

http://www.recordonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090522/BIZ/905220356/-1/BIZ16

This article is about how competitive the job market will get when the college kids will come out. There are some fields that are less sensitive to econimic trends and more to democratic such as educational and health services."The slight improvement in jobless rates from March to April is misleading, Nelson said, because it reflects seasonal hiring trends rather than an improving economy." I choose this article because Im graduating this year and soon I will be entering to college so wanted to know which fields are more competitive then others. At this time is not about if we agree or not because everything is about the economy our only choice is to accepted. I think is fairly presented because it is informing us about how competitive certain fields are more then others. Yes I will keep using this newes source again.

Do you think the information has been presented fairly?I think this article was presented very well due to both ends for bussiness owners and for everyday poeple Why or why not? This president obama article just shows what they want to do to improve it ,whats the cost.whos it going to effect basicly the five w's answered5, Would you use this news source again? yes://moneynews.newsmax.com/economy/auto_industry/2009/05/19/215817.html

Women rising !!!!!

http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/05/06/when-will-women-become-a-majority-of-the-workforce/?scp=3&sq=Gender and Job Losses&st=cse This article shows the statistics on how women are rising in the work force =) I gladly chose this article because it goes along with my last article. This shows me the statistics on how women are rising. I would have like to seen more research on why. But it does have great data. I extreamly agree with this article because. I do believe that women should be rising in the work force. I do not believe that it will decline. I believe we will stay equal or even rise above men, for the simple fact that we women must take care of our families. Why not just give us the payroll to support that statement? =) I would use this source again .

Keep it up!

Hi Everybody,

I've been thinking about what to write to you while I was reading your posts and comments and I've decided that since this blog is about learning I would tell you what I've learned. This time, it's the teacher learning from the students, not the other way around. :-D

First, I've learned something really important as a teacher -- that you are far more mature, nuanced and sophisticated thinkers than some people (?) might give you credit for. I'm particularly impressed with how you evaluate the information in your articles and web sites. You write if it's detailed, if it's specific, and if it include both sides. As a result, your judgments have been right on the money (sorry, couldn't resist).

I've also learned something really important about the economy from the items you chose to write about -- that as the economy gets worse, it affects our lives in ways we don't realize during better times. Our health is an economic issue. (Swine flu, anyone?) The opposite is also true -- the economy affects our health, both mental and physical. It affects where and how we live, since more people will be able to afford to buy a home as prices drop. And we're all looking for hope as we read those stories about jobs and unemployment.

Okay, here's the part you're looking for: the questions you have to answer.

Find an article about the economy, finances, or money on the Internet. It MUST be no more than 1 week old. Put the link to your article in your blog and answer the following questions.
1. What is this item about?
2. Why did you choose it?
3. Do you agree with what's happening in the news item you chose? Why or why not?
4. Do you think the information has been presented fairly? Why or why not?
5, Would you use this news source again?

Your participation in this blog counts as TWO TESTS. Your grade for this blog is based on how much you do, not how well I think you do it. Each question is worth 2 points, so every entry should earn you 10 points. Every comment you make on someone else's entry is also worth 2 points. The more you participate, the higher your grade will be.

Keep up the great work!

Ms. G :)

Small Banks: Boring But At Least We Are Profitable

This article is about how the banking job is supposed to be.. They say that banking is supposed to be boring. The bankers say that they wouldn't want there job any other way. Also if the banking job gets exciting then there is a problem in the banking world. I chose this because i like math and money and if you join the two you get banking which this article is about. I don't really agree with the thought that the job should be boring, i think that if its something you want to do it won't be boring. I dont think the information is given fairly because I think there are some people who think their banking job is not completely boring even when the banking world is running smoothly. Yes i would use this source again because i have found it reliable.

750,000 stimulus jobs by August - White House

http://money.cnn.com/2009/05/11/news/economy/stimulus_jobs/index.htm?postversion=2009051118

The Obama administration estimates that the economic stimulus plan will create or save 750,000 jobs by early August. As the administration has said previously, the report touts that the act will save or create 3.5 million jobs by the end of 2010. It also points to even bigger stimulus job creation and savings of 6.8 million jobs by the end of 2012. On April 29, President Obama said in a press conference that 150,000 jobs had already been saved or created by stimulus, which he signed on Feb. 17. White House officials have been careful to point out that estimated jobs created and saved have merely slowed continued job losses. The unemployment rate reached 8.9 percent in April, a 25-year high.

I chose this because it shows what the stimulus package has done and hopefully will continue to do for businesses. President Obama is taking the right step in helping people find jobs and save the ones they currently have. I do agree with this because finding a job nowadays is almost impossible and Obama is doing everything he can to help. I think the information was presented very well because it explains what Obama is planning to do to help us Americans. I would definetly use this site again, cnnmoney gives really good details.

City Wont Let Yankess slide on 67g lol hahaha

http://www.nydailynews.com/money/2009/04/22/2009-04-22_city_wont_let_yankees_slide_on_67g.html

this article is about how the new york yankess owe the city in 62,574 in rent for the past last year talkin about how they Once again, the Yankees overstated their rent deductions, underpaying the city the rent it's due," he charges in a report out Wednesday and also The BRONX BOMBERS didn't dispute the findings and plan to repay the money just as the team has paid millions in rent after similar challenges arose in the past eight years. AND I CHOOSE THIS article cause i think its kinda of funny that the yankess woe the city money and wont repay it back wen they have the most exspensive players in the mlb....and i agree wit what the article says because its ture that they should pay cause they have the money.....and yess i would use this news source again because they are telling facts and truth about what they write about ...!!!! thank you

April Homes

http://www.recordonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090512/BIZ/905120318

Tis article is about how the home prices have going down. There is a big difference in the prices from the months before even though is not a lot people see the difference. The reason why I choose it is because now that Im having a baby I feel that I need to be more involved in things like this. I need to see for a better future for my daughter and that includes having my own home.I think it is important for all of us to be informed about this. I think this article is great because is informing us how things are going and it also let us know thatwe are losing jobs but not as faster as before and it also saids that it's seems to be happening the same thing in real estate. I do believed this information have been presented fairly bacause buying a house is one of the most important decision to make. I will used this site again because it gave me enough information.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNsIE73HAhU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvMl1m5wPEI

The link above are video's about President Obama talking about the healthcare savings.
I choose it because i thought it was important for the people who are paying for healthcare or the people who don't have health care, and it help out those people.

It was presented fairly because he letting people know about the healthcare savings.

2 for 1: Obama praises Health Industry, Ex CEO doesn't

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090511/ap_on_go_pr_wh/us_health_overhaul_savings;_ylt=AsuBJYNB3DLrCA5ztIL45wLVJRIF

Obamas trying to make a move in the Health care Industry! Something a bit different than Clinton, Obama is praising the Health care Industry's promise to cut $2 Trillion in costs over 10 years. Hopefully this plan goes through unlike other failed trys at improving/reforming our Health care. Another fair presentation from Yahoo, ill be following it some more...

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/05/10/AR2009051002243.html

Seems not everyone wants cheaper Health care...
Ex (controversal) Hospital CEO, Rick Scott is already putting forth an effort against Obamas plan.... BEFORE ITS EVEN BEEN REVEALED! Scotts already put down $5 million of his own money and up to $15 million of supporters money to build resistance against this plan. I do not agree with this at all. I say Obama continue with his plan, and Scott be silenced from this debate. I found the Washington Post to be presented fairly, it was easy to read, understand, and professionally done. I would definately use this news source again.

MTA fare

http://www.recordonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090512/BIZ/905120323

This article is about how thw ATM's fares are going to increase. They are planning to increase this fares by June 17 for the Metro-North railroad and Long Island Railroad, and Subway and buses will change June 28 and bridge and tunnel tolls on July 12. They have got into an agreement for this fares instead of rising to $2.50 will be $2.25 which now is $2.00. A 30-day MetroCard will rise to $89 from $81. This reduction was made because of the the bailout package that the state Legislature passed last week to plug the $1.2 billion hole in the MTA's $11.4 billion budget this year. I choose this article because I been hearing about this lately on the TV so I was wondering what was this all about. I dont know if I agree with this increase, because I dont used this method of transportation, but if gas is going up I think is fair enough, even though I dont agree with the tunnel tolls being raise because I dont understand what is that going to benefit. Yes I think this information is fairly presented because even thought not all of us used this transportation we should all be aware of what is going on. I will keep using this site beacuse it has become very usefull for me.

At Least Small Businesses Are Hopeful on Economy

This item is about the trend of small businesses. In April small business optimism rebounded 5.8 points to 86.8. This broke a four month pattern of declines. Some peoploe are hoping this could be a sign of the end of the recession. I chose this because the recession would have a great impact on my life even more so when i start taking care of myself. Yes because if sales start increasing again the flow of money will help the economy. Yes the information has been given fairly because they are statistics and you can't lie about those. I have already used this source twice and i would use it again.

Women rising!!!!!

http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/05/06/when-will-women-become-a-majority-of-the-workforce/?scp=3&sq=Gender%20and%20Job%20Losses&st=cse This shows how women are rapedly rising in the economy I chose it becouse I love that women are rising =) yes I agree with it becouse most women are the main providers for our family

Private health insurance companies

http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2009/05/12/healthcare/index.html

President Obama plans to reform health coverage costs for insurance, and make health care possible for everyone. At this point, people are worried they won't be able to afford health insurance if they were to lose their job or something were to happen, people shouldn't have to worry so much about affording health care.

Some of the private companies who have been fighting the reform of health care are now saying that they are willing to join in the efforts. This reform could save a family of four 2500 dollars a year from health care costs.

I chose this article because if private health insurance companies join in this effort to change health insurance costs then it will help people a lot. I agree that these companies should reforn and make health care more available to people, everyone deserves to have health care.

Yes, I think this information was presented fairly, because it is just stating what these health companies said they were planning on doing. I would use this site again because they had a lot of interesting articles and information.

Bank of America said to raise $7.3 billion

http://money.cnn.com/2009/05/12/news/companies/boa_ccb/index.htm?postversion=2009051204

Bank of America has raised $7.3 billion from the sale of 13.5 billion shares of China Construction Bank, according to published reports. The U.S. bank sold the shares to a group that includes Singapore's sovereign wealth fund Temasek Holdings, Hopu Investment Management and China Life Insurance. The sale represents the maximum amount Bank of America (BAC, Fortune 500) could sell following the expiration of a lock-up agreement covering about one-third of its stake, the reports said.

I chose this because it has to do with the economy and how businesses are handling the crisis. I agree that this is a very good move for Bank of America, it will reduce Bank of America's stake in China Construction Bank to just under 11% from 16.7%, according to the FT. I think it was presented fairly well because it explains what Bank of America is doing to help itself in this crisis. I would use this site again, cnnmoney is very good to obtain information.

http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/patterson/48631
Well i don't know much about phones but the Blackberry Curve is awsome! Its a smart phone, and has a good phone provider. The iphone is good but the phone provider is terrible. The reason it outsold the iphone is because is cheaper and has good phone providers to choose from instead of AT&T.The reason i choose this article because the Blackberry Curve is awsome and make your life easier, but iphone is good too but too expensive in my opinion.

Obama aims at offshore tax havens!!!!

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headline/biz/6407981.html
#1. President Barack Obama presented a far-reaching set of proposals on Monday that are aimed at the tax benefits enjoyed by companies and wealthy individuals harboring cash in offshore accounts.
#2.I chose this articale because they could help raise $210 billion in revenues over 10 years, the administration estimates.
#3.yes because Obama said, “there are others who are shirking theirs, and many are aided and abetted by a broken tax system.”
#4.yes the information has been presented fairly because The president thus set up a clash with big business over the tax advantages enjoyed by companies with extensive overseas operations.
#5. o yea like the kool aid man.

real estate and the economy

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/05/business/economy/05turnaround.html?_r=2&hp

This article is about the signs of recovery for real estate. Investors and first time buyers are starting to compete for bargain prices on foreclosed houses. Competition helps the economy because it makes prices higher and spending money instead of everyone saving money helps make money circulate through the economy.

In March, houses baught was raised 35 percent from last year, in places such as California, Las Vegas and Florida. A raise in houses being sold and baught is going to help the economy a lot, for investors and banks, because they have to give loans and collect mortages. Housing also helps the stock market a lot. So this should help our struggeling economy.

I chose this article because it has a lot to do with our sturggeling economy and it is showing a way that the economy might be looking a little better. I agree that houses being sold more is going to help the economy and hopefully this is just the beginning for the economy to start looking better. This information was presented fairly, it does give you hope that the economy will some day soon start to get better and we won't always be in this slum.

I would use the New York Times again, it is a reliable source and it has interesting articles.
http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/04/28/happy-equal-pay-day/ Equal day this is the the were women get paid as much as men do. I choose this document becouse my brother gets paid more than my mother but she has been working longer than he has and they both do the same thing it got me questioning why? Their are things I agree with such as we as women have to work harder than men especialy a working mom becouse we not only have to take care of our children at work but we have to take care of the children at the office . Honestly I would have liked more data more info. Like have the prespective from a working mom or dad but thats just my toughts on this. I would like to use this sourse maybe just not on this subject.

Great job, everyone!

Dear Per. 6,

I've just read your posts and comments, and I'm so proud of all of you!! You obviously used some thought in choosing articles, and many of you used a great deal of thought writing about what you read. I'm particularly pleased that your comments were equally thoughtful and constructive. I've written comments for all your posts; please feel free to respond to my comment. You might also want to spend a moment reading through the other posts and commenting on those, too.
We'll be talking about jobs and work in class this week, so you might want to see if you can find articles about jobs -- especially how to find one in a tough economy. Also, try to use a different source this week than you did last week in order to broaden your knowledge of what kind of information is available on the Internet. As always, anything you find interesting is fine. So that you don't have to scroll all the way down to my first entry, here's what you have to do: Find an article about the economy, finances, or money on the Internet. It MUST be no more than 1 week old. Put the link to your article in your blog and answer the following questions. Please use proper spelling and punctuation! Your entry will be much easier to read.

  1. What is this item about?
  2. Why did you choose it?
  3. Do you agree with what's happening in the news item you chose? Why or why not?
  4. Do you think the information has been presented fairly? Why or why not?
  5. Would you use this news source again?

Your participation in this blog counts as TWO TESTS. Your grade for this blog is based on how much you do, not how well I think you do it. Each question is worth 2 points, so every entry should earn you 10 points. Every comment you make on someone else's entry is also worth 2 points. The more you participate, the higher your grade will be.
A blog is a conversation. I encourage you to be part of it so we can all help each other understand the tough times we live in. You can do it!
